Notes:
4-5 miles roundtrip
NOT dog friendly – don’t try, you will upset the rangers and deer
Good workout, incredible giant rock with caves at the end
Wide trail/fire road and single track – you choose!
Trailhead Address:
20828 Entrada Rd, Topanga, CA 90290
Driving Directions:
From PCH, take Topanga Canyon Blvd for 4.6 miles. Turn right on Entrada Rd and drive up the hill for one mile, following signs for Topanga State Park. There is a $10 day-use fee to park at Trippet Ranch, which is open from 8:00 a.m. to sunset. Free parking is available along the road just outside the park. Or you could become a Docent like I did and get a free annual parking pass!
Hiking:
There are two trails to get to Eagle Rock from Trippet Ranch.
1. The main trail/fire road, which is 2 miles from Trippet to Eagle Rock.
2. My personal favorite, Musch Trail, which is 2.5 miles from Trippet. For Musch Trail, head from the parking lot over the bridge and turn right up Musch Trail. Follow up the single track’s winding path, pass Musch Campground (water fountain!). Head on up to the top of Eagle Rock and crawl into the cave (which is one of the “eagle’s eyes”) and look out over the State Park, Pacific Palisades and the blue Pacific Ocean.
On your way back down, mix it up and take the alternative route back to Trippet Ranch.
If you’re here on a Sunday in between January and July, stop by the Visitor Center, say hi to a Docent, look at some stuffed wildlife and get all your nature questions answered.
